“Het wil maar niet opengaan; maar kijk eens naar de anderen: zijn dat niet de liefste eendjes, die je ooit van je leven gezien hebt? Zij lijken allemaal precies op hun vader; maar die ondeugd komt mij niet eens bezoeken.”
“Het doet immers niemand kwaad!”
“Het heeft te lang in het ei gezeten, en daardoor is het wat mismaakt geworden!”
“Het duurt geducht lang met dat ene ei,” zei de eend, die er nu weer op zat.
“Dat is wel mogelijk, maar het is te groot en ziet er zo vreemd uit,” zei de andere eend, “en daarom moet het eens een pikje hebben.”
“Die strekt zich nog ver aan de andere kant van het geboomte uit, tot aan de tuin van de pastoor; maar daar ben ik nog nooit geweest.”
“Het is te groot!” zeiden allen, en de kalkoense haan, die met sporen ter wereld gekomen was en daarom dacht, dat hij keizer was, blies zich op als een schip met volle zeilen en kwam op hem af; toen klokte hij en werd zijn kop vuurrood.
«Dood mij maar!» zei het arme beest.
“Laat mij het ei, dat niet wil opengaan, eens zien!” zei de oude eend.
“Hoor eens, kameraad!” zeiden zij; “je bent zo lelijk, dat je goed bij ons past.”
“Kijk eens! Nu moeten wij nog het aanhangsel krijgen, alsof wij al niet talrijk genoeg waren! En foei! wat ziet dat ene eendje er uit! Dat willen wij hier niet hebben!”
“Kijk, zo gaat het nu in de wereld!” zei de moeder der eendjes, en zij stak haar snavel al uit, want zij wilde de palingkop ook wel hebben.”
“Nee ik heb ze nog niet allemaal; het grootste ei ligt daar nog; hoe lang zal het nog wel duren, eer dat uitkomt?”
“Nee, het is geen kalkoen,” dacht de oude eend; “kijk eens, hoe ferm hij met zijn poten slaat en hoe recht hij zich weet te houden!”
“Nu begint het mij haast te vervelen!” en zij ging er weer op zitten.
“Piep, piep!” zei het jong en kroop er uit.
“Piefpafpoef!” klonk het weer, en nu vlogen er gehele scharen wilde ganzen uit het riet op.
“Piefpafpoef!” klonk het juist, en de beide wilde genten vielen dood in het riet neer, en het water werd bloedrood gekleurd.
“Kwak, kwak! Gaat maar met mij mee, dan zal ik je in de grote wereld brengen en je in de eendenkooi voorstellen: maar zorgt, dat je dicht in mijn nabijheid blijft, en neemt je voor de kat in acht!”
“Kwak, kwak!” zeide zij, en het ene eendje na het andere plofte er nu ook in; het water spatte hun om de kop, en zij doken even onder, maar kwamen al spoedig weer boven en zwommen uitmuntend.
