“Goddank!” zei het eendje met een zucht; “ik ben zo lelijk, dat de hond mij zelfs niet wil bijten.”
«Dat is een goede vangst!» zeide zij.
“Dat komt, omdat ik zo lelijk ben,” dacht het eendje, kneep de ogen even dicht en liep toen weer voort.
“Dat gaat immers niet,” zei de moeder van het eendje; “het is wel niet mooi, maar het heeft een goed hart en zwemt even flink als al de anderen, ja, ik moet zeggen, nog beter.
“De andere eendjes zien er allerliefst uit,” zei de oude eend; “doe maar, alsof je thuis waart, en als je een palingkop vindt, dan kun je die wel aan mij brengen.”
“Wat is de wereld toch groot!” zeiden al de jongen; want nu hadden zij heel wat meer plaats dan in het ei.
“Zij zijn allemaal mooi, behalve dat ene; dat is mislukt; ik zou wel willen, dat je dat eens wat anders kon maken.”
“Het zijn lieve kinderen die de moeder heeft,” zei de oude eend met het lapje om de poot
“Gebruik je poten nu!” vervolgde zij.
“Wel zo, hoe gaat het?” vroeg een oude eend, die haar eens een bezoek kwam brengen.
“Wat is dat een verschrikkelijk groot eendje,” dacht zij; “geen van de anderen ziet er zo uit.”
«Wat is dat voor een dwaze inval!» zei deze.
“Wat ben jij er voor één?” vroegen zij, en het eendje wendde zich naar alle kanten en groette zo goed het kon.
«Ja, er is een nieuwe bijgekomen!»
“Je bent toch allemaal wel bij elkaar?” vervolgde zij en stond op.
“Je bent verschrikkelijk lelijk!” zeiden de wilde eenden; “maar dat kan ons niet schelen, als je maar niet met iemand van onze familie trouwt!”
«Je begrijpt mij niet!» zei het eendje.
“Je moet het zelf weten,” hernam de oude eend en ging weg.
